A Pledge Night Update from Dave Horne

Greetings, NC EastEnders Fans! As you know, EastEnders pledge night at UNC-TV was canceled in 2009 due to an unexpected snowstorm. It was a disappointment for us all, and we held our breath this year hoping for better luck with the weather. Well, you can relax and breathe easy…2010 was our comeback year!

I’m thrilled to report that EastEnders fans in North Carolina and neighboring states raised an impressive total of $34,232 this past Sunday night! Not only that, but our volunteers filled all the available telephone stations and then some. What an incredible turnout—thank you, volunteers!

Here’s a detailed breakdown:

Amounts collected during the 4 EastEnders pledge breaks: $17,097, $7,135, $5,415, $2,720
Community Partner pledge: $1,500
Web/answering service: $365

Grand total: $34,232

A big thank-you also to our on-air talent: Julia Carpenter, Emilie de Luca, and Claire Meyerhoff. They were in peak form and inspired us all. We look forward to thanking them again at the upcoming “Perfectly Frank” screening.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Debbie Gilbert, editor of the national EastEnders newsletter, The E20 Chronicles. (Contact Debbie at E20Launderette@gmail.com to subscribe.) Year after year, Debbie works with us to provide new gifts for EE contributors, and this year her special-edition magazine was our centerpiece. We consider her an honorary member of the NC EastEnders Fan Club!

We also owe thanks to Shonni Dixon, Kim Johnson, and Mel Saunders for trekking across the state to volunteer on Sunday and bring the special Shane Richie pledge premiums. Not to mention the collection of fabulous Pat earrings!

Thanks also to our incomparable team at UNC-TV: Joanne Davis, Caroline Francis, Norma Hall, Arnetta Campbell, Kimmerly Payton, Gena Harris, Gloria Howell, and Jen Jones. They’ve been working with us for months to promote EastEnders and our pledge night. Our heartfelt thanks for their unstinting support!

Finally, our biggest thanks go to you—the wondrous NC EastEnders fans—for your generous contributions in support of the show. Once again, you’ve come through for EastEnders and for UNC-TV. We can look forward to another year of uninterrupted viewing and the satisfaction of knowing that we are helping a great cause: public television.

Our next get-together is the “Perfectly Frank” screening on May 7th, followed by a fan club lunch planned for June. I’ll send details as they become available.

A special thank you to Julia Carpenter for her continued assistance with our pledge night, to Tom Howe for making us feel important to the station and saying so, to Emily (and I apologize, but I don’t have your last name) for your help each year and making each of us fans feel appreciated. To Claire for her bravery in front of the camera and keeping those pledges coming in! To Dave and Linda for their partnership efforts on behalf of their group and UNC-TV and to Kim for her efforts in bringing the great gifts to us from the promises made this summer by Shane Richie - he’s a champion! And to Mel and Mel for making it possible for these things to happen in August, which led to the great gifts we received from the cast of EastEnders and to the continued connection we will have to EastEnders in the future.

UNC-TV has and will continue to be the best public television station in our country! Thanks for everything you do on behalf of our state and the fans!

Thank you so much for volunteering tonight and making Festival 2010 such a success! We appreciate your time and the contributions you made this evening. Our preliminary total tonight is $34,057!! We’ll send out an update later in the week with any contributions that may come in as folks watch their recorded shows.
